Inherit with the Son

Saints, in your prayers and in your walk remember the lasting inheritance you have in Jesus.

Consider the familiar story of the prodigal son: when he asked his father for the fullness of his inheritance in advance, he thought that it was all his father had to offer him. When the perishable inheritance was consumed and passed away, he remembered and understood. He returned home and gained the imperishable inheritance that abides forever.

Then, he understood the fullness of what he was to inherit from his father. It was not merely those riches which would profit his fleeting senses, or his immediate palate; but rather the love, the faithfulness, and the glory of growing from a relationship with his father. He was to inherit the wisdom of his father, the patience of his father, the hope and faith of his father, all of which made possible the joy of his father when he received back his son. Most of all he was to inherit love, which never fails and binds all things together.

Remember, brothers and sisters, as Peter wrote, that you were born not of perishable seed, but imperishable. Your inheritance is unfading, bound in the bosom of Christ.

When you long for understanding, know that now we understand only in part, but when the perfect comes that which is partial will give way to what is perfect. When you long for the present age to blossom, and you long for a name among men, remember that the present darkness is passing away— ashes to ashes— and that you have inherited a greater name, a name above every name. In the name of the Holy One you have been sealed for his eternal glory.

"'For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.’ And they began to celebrate.

'It was fitting to celebrate and be glad, for this your brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found.’”

Luke 15:24, 32

"Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart, since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God; for 'All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord remains forever.' And this word is the good news that was preached to you."

1 Peter 1:22-25
